Detective Overview

Fact One: A leading detergent company in India suddenly realized that whenever it was launching any new product, its main competitor was coming up with a matching product the very same day or sometimes even weeks before. The top management smelled foul play and contacted a leading detective agency in the country. Within a month, the cat was traced back to one of the company’s top executives who were selling the marketing secrets to the rival company against a huge price.

Fact Two: One of the top executives of a Calcutta based major consumer company was entitled to actual medical expenses incurred by his family. Every year he was getting reimbursed for huge medical expenses. The Vice President – HRD contacted a detective agency in the city. The secret was unveiled. The erring executive had friends in the medical fraternity who was giving him false bills to get reimbursement.

Fact Three: Amaresh (not the real name) was a very liberal and cool man. He truly loved his wife and never used to intervene into her day-to-day affairs. She was really having a great life. But one day Amaresh felt that she was not behaving like before. She was not easy with Amaresh. Months went by and Amaresh was certain something was amiss. He contacted a detective agency on a friend’s advice. The truth was revealed. She was having a gala affair with her childhood lover. Amaresh was shattered but the agency handed him over enough photographic evidence to get a divorce.

Exciting, isn’t it? Finding the truth and thus solving problems and fraud is really a great service. Are you interested? Are you a keen reader of detective story books and try to analyze facts that you read or hear about? Do you feel fascinated by the acts of CBI and police detectives which you read about in newspapers? Yes? Then why don’t you become a detective yourself?

The field is prospective indeed. Business of private agencies is growing at a rate of about 12% a year. The growth is being fuelled by the increase in cut throat competition in the industry, pressure on the banks and financial institutions to increase rate of recovery of loans, the risk of employing a wrong person in a company and the loss of money due to this, increase in terrorism, dacoity, arson and other crimes in the modern society, and of course by the increase in social complexities.

But still, many like G.M.Ghosh of Calcutta based Blackboy Detective Agency Pvt.Ltd. feels that the real growth is yet to come. He feels that the business is not growing that fast because the fees charged by the agencies are high enough to keep many potential clients away.

But he is optimistic as he feels that there is an increasing awareness about the utility of detective services in the country and with the no. of agencies also on the rise, the fees are bound to be less as in other businesses. This will bring in more clients and thus the business will expand.

It should also be remembered that the private detective agencies are not the largest employers of detectives. There are large contingents of trained detectives in the Police, in the defence forces, in the central detective agencies like CBI, RAW, IB. Activities of people working in the State and Central Vigilance Commission are also similar to those of detectives. Although detectives are not directly recruited by any of the above governmental agency, jobs are there.
