Students
today are quite frankly spoilt for options when it
comes to pursuing a career. A career today, backed by
cut-throat-competition, limitless career choices and
changing industry trends have all contributed to
making a choice of career a ‘daunting one’
Today
more than ever before making an ‘informed career
choice’ based on one’s Aptitude, Interest and
Personality is the only way to thrive in a career and
not merely survive. At YoungBuzz we believe if you
choose a career you like, you’ll never work a day.
Why does one need Career counselling?
Firstly Career counselling helps you to know yourself better so you are aware of your strengths and weaknesses. Secondly it helps one to obtain information about careers, institutes and job trends in a single sitting thus saving on time. Thirdly career counselling gives an individual unbiased advice without the influence of parental expectations and peer pressure. And lastly the career tests are not general tests but very detailed oriented and students are advised on various careers based on the integration of these psychometric testing.
What is Career Counselling tests all about?
A student usually goes through 3 tests to arrive at a career based on their interest, personality and aptitude. These tests are usually for 3 hours and are not based on any syllabus or curriculum. There is no prior preparation required for these tests and an individual should be in a relaxed, focused and honest while answering them. The Aptitude tests are spread over a number of variables integrated into the questions. Eg: Mechanical reasoning measures how well a person can understand mechanical principles, spatial relations measures how well a person can visualise or think in three dimensions, verbal reasoning measures how well a person can reason with words. Then there are variables like numerical ability, language usage, word knowledge, manual speed and dexterity and finally perceptual speed and accuracy. A high score indicates a high aptitude. The personality test analyses students on their core values eg Investigative v/s Accepting, Practical v/s carefree, Independence v/s Conformity, Leadership v/s Supportive, orderliness v/s flexibility and so on. This test enables a student to know their dominant work values i.e values that are most important to an individual while they work. The Interest test involves assessing a student over a cross-section of clusters like Science, Technology, Consumer Economics, Business, Outdoor, Clerical, Communication, Arts and service.
The
tests are then integrated to make the student aware of
the top three careers career options and back up
plans.
Why
is it so important to plan a career?
-
Many
educational institutes are churning out courses
that are streamlined or specialised to cater to
specific industries or trends. Never before did
institutes offer courses like MBA in Capital
Markets or Educational Toy-Designing.
-
Density
of jobs has increased with women filling up jobs
once meant only for men or by rural population
filling up jobs meant for up town urban
population.
-
Considering
the amount of money one spends in educating
oneself it would be a waste if the ultimate career
choice would be one with which is not satisfied.
-
And
lastly since most of ones adult life is spent at
the workplace, it is becomes imperative to find
jobs that one enjoys so as to grow into productive
and emotionally strong individuals of society.
