CAT to Replace JMET

From this year (2011), the Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) will be discontinued as the admission test for management programs in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Instead, these premier Indian institutes will now use the Common Admission Test (CAT) as the selection process for such programs from the academic year of 2012-13.

There were a number of reasons behind this change, including the fact that both the entrance examinations were quite similar and that the number of students taking the JMET was decreasing over the years.

This decision will reduce not only the preparation needed to conduct and appear for the test but also the financial burden on both the authorities and students, as the scores of a single entrance exam will be acceptable.

In 2011, the CAT is scheduled to be held in between October 22 and November 18 across 36 cities in the country.
