created: 22nd Mar 2017 Last Modified: 22nd Mar 2017You will need a degree in Industrial design. You can directly join course in Industrial design (with specialization in Product design / Furniture design / Ceramic design) or a separate course in Interior design / Furniture design / Ceramic design after your class XII. It is also possible to do an Integrated course in Applied Arts with specialization in Interior design / Ceramic design after your class X. There are some vocational diploma courses also after class X or XII in Interior design and Ceramic design.
Many people who are graduates in other fields can also join Industrial design courses at an advanced level. Graduates in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics, Industrial, Production), Architecture, and Computer Science can join an advanced level course in Product design. Graduates in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical), Architecture, Interior Design, Fine Arts and Applied Arts can join an advanced level course in Furniture Design. Graduates in Fine or Applied Arts, Architecture, Engineering and Ceramic Technology can do an advanced entry program in Ceramic Design. People with Diploma in these areas with about 2 years of relevant experience can also do these programs.
It is difficult to tell you about the best courses as there is no official ranking available but in any case, the 4 years integrated Professional Diploma program of NID (National Institute of Design), the 4 years Bachelor of Design program of IIT, Guwahati, the Master of Design (M. Des) program of IIT, Mumbai, the M. Des of IIT, Delhi, and the 2 years advanced entry program of NID are some of the most sought after courses.
