I have an MBA in marketing from Pune University in 1995. I am working for the last seven years but have never stuck to a single job. I have already changed five jobs. Initially, I thought it would add to my experience. But now inspite of my sending resumes to companies, I am not even called for interviews. Right now, I’m still on the same level where I started off and it is very frustrating. Please help.
This kind of stagnancy comes to almost every one in their career. Don’t worry, you will definitely come out of this situation. There could be various reasons for this situation. It could be that you are not being able to present yourself appropriately through your resume and in the interviews. After all, in any job, what you do is sell yourself through the resume and interview. It could be that you do not have a clear and specific career goal, hence you end up applying to every job without considering whether the requirements of the job matches your profile and background. This increases the chances of rejection. It could be that you fail to show how your experience in a variety of jobs has actually helped you to acquire a wider industry experience. First of all, set up clear and specific career goals. Analyse your work experience. Find out in which of your past jobs you were comfortable – what was its job profile and industry. Then analyse your performance over the last seven years and find out your strengths and weaknesses, i.e., find out what you do best and what you can’t do. Then check job prospects of various industries which fit your background. See the requirements of senior level marketing jobs and analyse which industry’s/ job’s requirements are closest to your strengths. Based on your findings, you should set a clear career goal. Based on your goal, see whether you have all the skills required for the jobs you have your eyes on. If not, then acquire those skills. Attend management development programmes and seminars to learn new skills. Emphasise your strengths, skills and abilities in your resume. Emphasise your achievements and learnings in various jobs. Make your resume look different. In the interview, emphasise how your learning in the past jobs will help you to perform in the job for which you are giving the interview.
