I have heard of Biomedical Engineering. How can I study that? Is it very tough to get into that course and which college has it?

Biomedical engineers apply knowledge of engineering, biophysical, and biomechanical principles to design, develop, manufacture, and maintain biological and healthcare systems and products, such as artificial organs, artificial tissues, surgical process monitoring instruments, medical information systems, diagnostic systems and instruments, heath management systems.

You can study Biomedical Engineering in two ways. One, you can study B. E in Biomedical Engineering right after your HSC with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology. For admission in Engineering colleges in Maharashtra, you will have to apply to Directorate of Technical Education, Government of Maharashtra and appear for a counselling process. Please log on to www.dte.org.in for details of this years admission. The second alternative is to study MBBS after your HSC with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics and then do a Master degree in Biomedical Engineering or in Medical Technology. To study MBBS in medical colleges in Maharashtra, you will have to sit for MH-CET, which is a common entrance test for admission into medical and paramedical courses in Maharashtra. This year, the test has already been held. For admission to post-graduate courses in Biomedical Engineering or Medical Technology, you will have to appear in separate entrance examinations conducted by IIT, Mumbai and IIT, Kharagpur.

Colleges offering B.E in Biomedical Engineering are 1) Shri Vile Parle Kelvani Mandal's College of Engineering, Plot No. U-15, J.V.P.D. Scheme, Bhaktivedanta Swami Marg, Vile Parle (W), Mumbai - 400 056; Thadomal Shahni Engineering College, 32nd Road, T.P.S.-III, Bandra, Mumbai 400 050; Mahatma Gandhi Mission's College of Engineering, Junction NH4, Sion-Panvel Express Highway, Kamothe, New Bombay-410 209. Institutions offering Master degree in Biomedical Engineering is Indian Institute of Technology, Powai, Mumbai and Master degree in Medical Technology is offered by Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, West Bengal.

It is difficult to say whether getting admission to these courses is tough. It depends on individual. For some it may be difficult and for some it may be easy. In any case, it can be said that to get into these courses, you need to have excellent academic performance. For example, you should obtain around 85% in HSC to be able to considered for a B. E course and if you want to do it at Masters level, then there are two hurdles MH-CET and Entrance examinations for the post graduate courses. Without academic excellence, its difficult to qualify in these examination.
