I am a graduate in mathematics. I wish to join either the banking sectors or Indian Railways. Through UPSC I feel it’s very difficult for me to select an optional subject other than mathematics. How can I be selected for the Railways? Please give me all the possible information regarding the Indian Railways and also the banking sector. What is the selection procedure in the various departments in the railways?
Direct recruitment to posts and services in Class I and Class II for non-technical services - the Indian Railway Traffic Services (IRTS), the Indian Railway Personnel Services (IRPS), the Indian Railway Accounts Services (IRAS), and the Railway Police Service is made through the Combined Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission.
The Indian Railway Traffic Service
This branch of the Indian Railways looks after transportation and commercial matters pertaining to transportation. The branch is further divided into two divisions: The commercial division and the operations division.
Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS)
As the name suggests this branch of the Railways deals with the accounting and finance operations of the Indian Railways. Working in this branch would entail dealing with financial transactions and hence a thorough knowledge of accounting procedures and related practices would prove an asset for officers who opt for this branch of the Indian Railways.
Indian Railway Personnel Service (IRPS)
As the name indicates, officers in this division handle all matters relating to recruitment, promotions, Training and even staff welfare, staff welfare activities, transfers, informing the finance department about the increments due to individuals, disciplinary actions and so on.
Railway Protection Service/ Railway Protection Force
This branch of the Indian Railway Services operate as other para-military forces. They are responsible for the maintenance of law and order on trains and on premises owned and used by the Indian Railways.
Apart from these services, there are various Railway engineering services like Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE), Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME), Indian Railway Service of Signal Engineers (IRSSE) and Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE).
For employees who are recruited though the Combined Civil Services Examination, no particular discipline is specified at the graduate level. However for the Railway Engineering Services an engineering degree or its equivalent is a must.
Apart from these class I and class II officer cadre jobs, for all the other jobs, recruitment of personnel is made by various Railway recruitment boards. Some of the jobs are:
Probationary Asistant Station Master, Apprentice Train Examiner, Guard, Enquiry-cum- Reservation Clerk, Accounts Clerk, Junior Accounts Assistant, etc
Entrance tests for these posts generally include questions on general ability (Arithmatic, Logical and analytical resoning and general intelligence) and English language.
Entry level banking services can be classified into two categories – clerical jobs and probationary officer level jobs. Clerical level recruitment and most of the officer level recruitment are managed by Banking Service Recruitment Boards. For both of the categories of jobs, candidates have to appear for entrance test and interview.
The examination for clerical jobs include objective type as well as descriptive type questions. The objective type test includes questions on reasoning ability, clerical aptitude, numerical aptitude and English language. The descriptive type test comprises of four questions on short essay or comprehension. Those who qualify the written test are called for interview.
For recruitment of probationary officers, BSRB conducts a written test and then an interview for those who qualify in the written exam. The written exam has an objective part and a descriptive part. The objective part comprises of questions on Reasoning Ability, Quantitative Aptitude, English and General Awareness. The descriptive part comprises of four questions on a typical situation and the candidate is expected to comprehend, analyze and then express his view on it. Those who qualify in the written test are called for an interview. The interview assesses intelligence, leadership qualities, and decision-making capacity of the candidates.
