Through the Ministry of Foreign

offers the following scholarships to students from
some developing countries (including India).
MFAT NZODA Postgraduate Scholarships
The New Zealand Government offers
scholarships to international students from selected
developing countries for postgraduate studies in New
Zealand. It is expected that holders of these
scholarships will return to their own countries with
enhanced skills that will enable them to contribute
more effectively to the development of their
countries. Only citizens of certain countries
(including India) are eligible. Also the guidelines of
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicate that students
from lower socio-economic backgrounds and those who
are indigenous people of their countries may be given
preference. In awarding scholarships the Ministry
seeks to maintain a balance between male and female
students. The administration of NZODA Postgraduate
Scholarships is carried out by New Zealand
universities. After the students are granted admission
to a postgraduate programme, they may then apply to
the university for a NZODA Postgraduate Scholarship.
The university will assess the students on their
academic merit as well as the developmental relevance
of their proposed course of studies.
The scholarships cover:

University of Auckland International Doctoral
Scholarship
The University of Auckland established
these Scholarships in 2000 in order to attract and
assist International students to pursue doctoral
research at the University. The Scholarships will be
available annually to students enrolling at the
University of Auckland for the Degree of Doctor of
Philosophy. The University of Auckland International
Doctoral Scholarship has a value of $18,000 per annum
plus up to $15,000 per annum as a contribution towards
PhD (tuition) fees.
University of Canterbury Doctoral and
Masters Scholarships
Scholarships are offered annually for
study towards a Ph.D. degree (Doctoral) or for the
thesis year of a Masters degree (Masters). Competition
for these scholarships is very keen and applicants
must have gained a first class honours degree or the
equivalent. International students who meet this
criterion and who have been granted admission ad
eundem to a Ph.D. or Masters degree by thesis at this
university are eligible to apply. The value of the
Doctoral Scholarships is $12,000 per annum, paid
monthly. This should be adequate to meet the living
expenses of a single student but international
students will still require sufficient additional
funds to pay the tuition fees at the beginning of each
year. The value of the Masters scholarship is $5,000
per annum, also paid monthly.
