I am facing a serious career problem. I kindly request you to solve it by giving me answers in details, Please. I am student of MBA (Finance). I would like to know few things. They are as follows: 1) What are all the job's of an MBA graduate (Finance)? 2) What are his responsibilities? 3) What are all the posts that he can apply for initially and after that? Where do I fit in it as a fresher? What knowledge should I have in each of these fields?

MBAs specialized in Finance can get a job in:

Corporate finance/finance and accounts department of corporate organizations

A bank in its operations/treasury/ investment banking/foreign exchange department

Financial Services Company in operations/ investment banking/ capital market operations/ equity research and investment analysis/ asset management departments

Stock brokerage firm in capital market operations/ marketing/ equity research and investment analysis department

Insurance company in fund management/operations/ investment analysis department

Management/finance consultancy organization

Job responsibilities depend on the function/department in which one is involved. For example, if you are involved in investment banking, your work would involve advising companies on capital formation, mergers, acquisitions, investments and managing capital assets. You will have to look into the financial aspects like advising a company or a client on financial transaction, selling and trading the securities. You also have to analyse and make recommendations for financial investment to the company, based on the market and competitors.

Your job will also involve extensive research on industries and companies. You will have to find out opportunities to invest in profitable shares, debentures and other financial instruments. You will also invest and control the portfolio of shares, decide which shares to buy and which to sell to gain maximum returns.

Initially, you will get a job as a management/executive trainee. As a trainee, you will be rotated through various financial functions of the company. You will have learn on the job. After your training period is over, you will be given responsibilities based on your interests and performance during training period. You will be working in the assistant/frontline management of the company.

A fresher almost always starts his life as a trainee. You will be required to learn a lot on the job in the first two years. But as an MBA, you will be expected to have a thorough knowledge in finance.
