- I am in the second year of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering in Pune. Though I like my branch, I am more keen to study Mass Communications. (I want to be a broadcast journalist). I know its a little weird especially after engineering. But I believe Mass Communications is a postgraduate course, right? Please tell me about the good institutions of mass communications in India. What are their entrance exams like? What is the eligibility criteria, can I as an engineer, take up Mass Communications? How do I prepare for the entrance tests - please recommend the books, tutorials etc.? What are the skills I should have to be a good broadcast journalist?

created: 22nd Mar 2017 Last Modified: 27th Mar 2017Mass communication can be studies both at the Undergraduate as well as Post graduate level. And yes, even if are an Engineering graduate, you can always shift to Mass communication. Graduates in any stream are eligible for a Post graduate course in Mass communication.
A few of the good institutions offering post graduate courses in Mass communication are:
AJK Mass Communication Research Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi - 110025
Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Aruna Asaf Ali Marg, Jawaharlal Nehru University Campus, New Delhi 110067
University of Pune, Department Of Communication Studies, Pune 411 007
Manipal Institute of Communication, Manipal
Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication, Pune
Eligibility for all the above courses is a graduation in any discipline. Some of the institutes ask for 50% marks in aggregate. Admission to all the courses are made through an entrance examination and an interview.
Generally, there are questions on English and general awareness in the entrance examination. So, you need to be very good in English language and your general awareness should be excellent. We are not aware of any tutorials for the entrance examination but you get yourself prepared with tutorials meant for other examinations such as CAT/GMAT. These tutorials will help you a lot to hone up your English language. For general awareness, start reading a frontline newspaper everyday and a number of magazines ranging from general interest magazines to sports magazines to political magazine to film magazines. Surf the Internet regularly and visit the General Knowledge sites. You can also refer to books like the Monorama Yearbook. Watch quiz programmes on television regularly. There is no short cut method to develop general awareness.
To be a broadcast journalist, you need a flair for communication, an ability to express ideas lucidly and concisely, open mindedness, unbiased approach to things in life, curiosity, wide ranging interests, sensibility to social and political environment, an instinct for a story's newsworthiness, resourcefulness, ability to sift relevant facts from irrelevant information, stamina, courage, and willingness to work hard at irregular hours and on holidays.
