There are 2 ways to enter CBI one is through the Combined Civil Services Examination (CSE) held for recruitment of Civil Services officers and the other is through the Combined Graduate Level examination conducted by the Staff Selection Commission, Government of India.

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the combined Civil Services Examination. By qualifying in this examination you can opt for the posts of Deputy Superintendent of Police Group A in the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Eligibility for CSE examination: You need to be between 21 and 30 years of age as on August 1 every year for the exam and you need a degree from any university or deemed university. Candidates with professionals and technical qualifications recognised by the government are also eligible.

Examination details: There are 2 stages of the CSE Preliminary examination and Final examination. If you qualify in the Preliminary examination, then only you will be called for the final examination. After the final examination, based on the performance in the examinations, a select few of the candidates are called for the Interview and personality test. Your final selection will depend on your performance in the interview and personality test.

The Preliminary examination has 2 papers General Studies and one optional paper (you have to select from Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Commerce, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Geography, Geology, Indian History, Law, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Science, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Public Administration, Sociology, Statistics, Zoology). General Studies paper will consist of questions on English usage, Mathematics, General awareness and Indian constitution, history and culture. Both the papers are of objective type.

The Main examination consists of nine papers and all the papers have conventional essay type questions. The nine papers are: Optional language (you can choose from Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu), English, Essay writing, General Studies and 4 other papers, 2 each of 2 optional subjects (You can choose from Agriculture, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Anthropology, Botany, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Commerce & Accountancy, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Geography, Geology, History, Law, Management, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Science, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science & International Relation, Psychology, Public Administration, Sociology, Statistics, Zoology).

By qualifying in the Combined Graduate level examination conducted by Staff Selection Commission, Government of India, you can opt for the job as a Sub-inspector in CBI.

Examination details: The examination is held in 2 stages as same as the CSE Preliminary examination and Main examination. If you qualify in the Preliminary examination, then only you will be called for the final examination. After the final examination, based on the performance in the examinations, a select few of the candidates are called for the Interview and personality test. Your final selection will depend on your performance in the interview and personality test. To be eligible, you need to be a graduate and your age should be between 21-30 years.

The preliminary examination has two objective type papers on General Intelligence and General Awareness and Arithmatic. The Main examination has five papers consisting of conventional essay type questions. The papers are: English, English Language Comprehension, Communication skills and writing ability, Arithmatic and General Studies.
