Textile design and development courses are offered at National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). The courses are at post graduate level and you will need a graduation in any subject with at least 50% marks in aggregate. Duration of the courses is 2 years.

Textile Design courses

The NIFT entrance test is conducted once a year only in the second week of January. The written test consists of General ability test, Creative ability test, and situation test. These tests have weightage of 30%, 30%, and 20% respectively in the overall selection procedure. Interview has 20% weightage. The General ability test comprises test of Quantitative ability, Communication ability, English comprehension, Analytical ability, Environment awareness, and logical ability. The Creative ability test includes fashion sketching, thematic color arrangement involving drawing/illustration. The Creative ability test is to evaluate the sense of colour, pattern, eye for details, and originality of the candidate. It also evaluates the candidates innovative and creative thinking.

After the program, you will get opportunities in design, product development, styling/ colouring, and marketing functions of textile companies and export houses. You will also get opportunities in textile buying agencies, design studios and handloom co-operatives. You can also get into teaching. Opportunities in foreign countries are almost non-existing unless you have a long experience in the industry.
