In order to become an Ayurvedic medical practitioner, a formal medical education is mandatory. Candidates who have passed BAMS, MBBS (recognized by Medical Council of India and have completed one year internship training) can apply for post graduate programmes in Ayurveda. The Post graduate programmes are conducted by many recognised institutions and has a duration of 3 years leading to degrees of Doctor of in Ayurveda (M.D. (Ayu)) and Master of Surgery in Ayurveda (M.S. (Ayu)). Dr. B.R.K.R.Govt.Ayurvedic College, Hyderabad conducts a number of courses in ayurveda.

You can log on to www.ccimindia.org (an official website of Central Council of Indian Medicine) or www.indianmedicine.nic.in for a detailed list of Medical colleges in India that offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Ayurvedic medicine.

You could alternatively do a Master degree in Medicinal Plants Sciences M.Sc.(Ayu. Medicinal Plants) from the Gujarat Ayurved University www.ayurveduniversity.com, the eligibility of which is Graduate in Botany or Pharmacy or Agriculture or Ayurveda. The university of pune http://www.unipune.ernet.in/indexout.html too offers a number of diploma and certificate courses in ayurveda
