Institutes, which offer B. Tech in Naval Architecture, are:

Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, West Bengal 721302 and Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, Tamil Nadu 600036.

Course: B.Tech (Hons)/ M. Tech (dual degree) in Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering.

Duration: 4 years for B. Tech and 5 years for M. Tech

Eligibility and admission procedures are the same for both the IITs.

Eligibility: Higher secondary with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics

Admission procedure: You have to qualify in IIT JEE, which is conducted in two phases. The preliminary examination has one paper of objective type questions on higher secondary standard Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. If you qualify in the preliminary examination, you will be called to appear for the Final examination which is held in May. The final examination consists of separate papers on Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The final examination papers contains both objective questions and short answer type questions.

Cochin University of Science and Technology

Kochi, Kerala -682022.

Course: B.Tech. in Naval Architecture & Ship Building

Eligibility: Higher secondary with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with at least 60% marks.

Admission procedure: You have to appear for the CUSAT - CAT (Cochin University of Science & Technology Common Admission Test). The test contains papers on higher secondary level Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Duration: 4 and years

Course content: You will have study basic science like Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, Computer Technology; Basic engineering sciences like Engineering Design, Thermodynamics, Basic Electronics, Engineering Drawing, Engineering Mechanics, Strength of Materials, and Fluid Mechanics; Ship building and ocean engineering subjects like Materials for ships and offshore structures, Ship Structure, Ship Hydrodynamics, Marine Engineering, Computer Aided Structural Design & Development, Ship Propulsion, Ocean wave Hydrodynamics, Ship design, and Offshore Structural Design.

You will also have to attend workshops and labs like Physics, Applied Mechanics, General Machine and Ocean Engineering. You will have to undergo extensive industrial training. You will have to complete a project as well.

You will get jobs with:

Ship builders and offshore constructors such as Garden Reach Ship Builders & Engineers Ltd. and Mazgaon Docks Ltd. 

Companies involved in offshore petroleum drilling for petroleum like ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Commission).  

Companies engaged in the design of products as propulsion systems, auxiliary (back up) systems, under water equipment and control systems.

Technical departments of shipping companies like Shipping Corporation of India Ltd. 

National and international agencies such as the International Maritime Organisation as Ship Surveyors.
