I want to become an ad filmmaker and have some concept regarding some products. I can create some other ads also if I am offered. For the past 4 years, I am dreaming as an ad film maker and that is why I came to HYD last year. I went to some ad agencies in HYd. but they are all related to print media. But I can create ads for electronic media (the ads, which we are seeing in various channels) so please try to give me some information, how my approach should be and some suggestions too.

You havent mentioned what kind of training you have in film making (to be specific, training in cinematography or direction). You can either have a formal qualification in these areas from a reputed institute plus some experience in ad film making or a good 4-5 years of experience as an assistant to a commercial/ feature film director or cinematographer. If you want to say, I can create ads for electronic media, you have to back it up with solid qualifications and/or experience. Otherwise nobody will believe you.

Besides, almost no advertising agency keeps a full time team for making ad films. They outsource the film from other agencies/ individuals who are specialised in ad film making. The agency just gives a brief on the film and a story board. The ad film making agency/individual then take it up and write the complete script, select the cast and the crew, shoot the film and the take care of all post-production job. Sometimes, the advertising agency also gives the script of the film. The advertising agencys role is to just making sure that the film is done as par the brief and within the deadline.

So the best way into the career would be first to obtain a qualification in film direction/cinematography and then look for work as an assistant to an ad film maker. After having a good 4-5 years of experience, then perhaps you can approach advertising agencies for work. Please also keep in mind, just knocking at the advertising agencies door may not work. To get work, you have to network with people in the industry and let yourself and your work known.

However, if you think this is a long route, you can consider working in the creative department of an advertising agency instead. We can suggest a way to get a job. Develop your own portfolio. The portfolio should contain evidence of your abilities. You can try reworking some ads that you have watched or read. Try to extract the core concept behind the ad- what does it say, to whom does it want to say, what is the strategy. Then build on this core concept to recreate the ad in a different way. Grab your portfolio, write your resume and then approach agencies. It may work.
