Is it important to have a degree? Shouldnt I instead concentrate on getting a diploma after 10+2?

You want to know whether it is important to have a degree - the most relevant question here is which course are you considering as well as the institute from which you are doing the degree or diploma. For instance, a person having a degree in Computer Engineering has better job prospects than a person having a diploma in the same field. A person having a Diploma in Hotel Management from a reputed institute has better job prospects that a person holding a degree from an unknown institution.

it is also important for you to remember that there are a lot of specialised courses that can be done only after graduation, e.g. Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Management, Post-Graduate diploma in Journalism and so on. As far as recruitment is concerned, most of the companies demand graduation as the minimum eligibility criterion.

It is possible that you do not realise the significance of having a degree to fall back on, however, a few years down the line, you might regret not having a degree. Please keep in mind that doing a full time degree course is only one of the options- you could enroll for a degree programme by distance education program if that suits you better. Distance education is very helpful for those who wish to do part-time courses or work and therefore are not in a position to attend regular classes.

In order that there is no room for regrets and frustrations - now or later, you need to do some introspection: Why are you not interested in pursuing a degree programme? Is it because the subjects you are studying are not of interest to you? Is it because of financial issues? Is it because you want to enter the work force as soon as possible? Or do you feel that a degree is not worth the effort and the time? As far as earning well is concerned, your knowledge, dedication and motivation will assure success and money in almost any field. It is commendable that you are willing to go outside Hyderabad for studies, however, you need to do some introspection before you take any decision.

Identifying your areas of Interest would help you a great deal in narrowing down your career options and therefore your course options. It is also advisable to get objective and scientific information vis-a-vis your interests, aptitudes and personality to make wise career related decisions. Career Guidance Centres regularly hold such Assessment sessions. These tests will not only give you insights into your personality with regards to your career but also reveal your interest areas and whether or not you have the aptitude required to succeed in these fields. Choose your degree/ diploma course based on the requirements of the careers that are suitable for you.
