- I'm a student of Standard 12th, I cleared my examinations in October. I'm interested in going into sound and/or special effects. I want to know what is the minimum requirement for going into such fields, and which colleges in Mumbai and India allow you to study these subjects. I would also appreciate if you could give me some good information about the colleges in the US and Canada and regarding admission procedures and requirements. I'm very keen on learning these things and I would really appreciate if you could help me out.

created: 22nd Mar 2017 Last Modified: 22nd Mar 2017Multimedia designs generally comprise of graphic design, animation design and special effects. Application of multimedia design is in film and television production, print media and advertising. As a multimedia designer, you will get opportunities in animation design and special effects, graphic design, film and video programming. An animation designer does all the animation of films, television serials, advertisement films, and even special effects of feature films. Graphic designers generally design communication materials in print, television and web sites. Film and video programmers produce special effects and manage the technical development of a film.
With a phenomenal rise in mass media activities, the overall opportunities of multimedia design are currently on a significant growth path. For example, the size of the entertainment industry in India (largely comprising film industry and television production) is Rs 12, 000 crore today. Experts believe that given the right kind of support by the Indian Government, this turnover can increase six-fold to about Rs. 75,000 crore by 5 years. The global market for animation is estimated to grow to US $40 billion by next year of which India is going to corner a large chunk. In animation and special effects alone, Indian companies have already implemented projects worth approximately US $ 300 million. The market for video production is also growing fast with an increase in the number of television channels in India. All this means, there will be a healthy demand for multimedia designers in the coming years.
You can be self-employed in the field of multimedia design mostly as a freelancer or independent designer after having 5-7 years of experience. Setting up your own design studio needs huge investment. Though there are lot of opportunities in this business, competing with big companies may prove to be very difficult.
