There is no specific course offered in Genetic engineering. It is a subject in the curriculum of higher degrees in Biotechnology and related courses. For example, if you study B. Tech/ M. Tech/ M. Sc. in Biotechnology or related subject, then you will read about Genetic engineering. One can also do Ph. D with a project in Genetic engineering. As there is no such specific course so talking about prospects of Genetic engineering. Genetic engineering is a part of Biotechnology therefore its prospects are in line with the prospects of Biotechnology.

Biotechnology has tremendous prospects in the coming years. In fact it is billed to be the next big thing after Information technology. The scopes of Biotechnology are endless. The total market of biotechnological products is going to touch an astronomical figure of US$ 50 Billion in the next five years. Biotechnology throws open tremendous opportunities for employment. For example, stem cell research (stem cells are human embryonic cells that can grow into any cell of human body), genetic profiling (or genome mapping which enables medical community to identify disease producing genes), bioinformatics (management of biological information), biomedical engineering (replacing human body parts with engineered parts), drug development, genetic modifications (engineering organisms to produce desired characteristics), and agricultural biotechnology (to develop genetically modified crops and food products) are going to offer a large number of opportunities.

There are a few options for getting into Genetic Engineering 1) you can do a B. Tech in Biotechnology after higher secondary and then a M. Tech, 2) A B.E in Biomedical Engineering and then a M. Tech in the same subject or in Biotechnology, 3) a B. Sc. in Biotech and then a M. Sc., 4) A B. Sc. in any Physical Science subject (Physics, Chemistry, Life Science, Zoology, Physiology, Microbiology, etc.) and then a M. Sc. in Biotechnology/Molecular Biology, 5) A B. Sc. in any Physical Science subject (Physics, Chemistry, Life Science, Zoology, Physiology, Microbiology, etc.) and then a M. Sc. in a the same subject which you did in B. Sc. Thereafter you can do a Ph. D in Biotech (with a project in Genetic engineering).
